Sunshine Terrace

What began as a modest addition, evolved into a comprehensive transformation of this Studio City home - involving a full refinishing of the interior and exterior surfaces, flooring, doors, and windows.

Decades of disparate renovations had left the home fragmented from its basement level. The homeowners wished to unify the two levels, by way of an interior stair, linking the basement to the main living areas – spaces previously accessible only via exterior walkway. This project not only added functional square footage but also created a welcoming spare bedroom for visiting family and friends.

The basement lounge also serves as a small home theater, with a floor-to-ceiling projector concealed in the ceiling.

Using the final available permissible square footage, the addition occupies an efficient 30 square feet with a prefab steel stair at its core. This vertical connector, crowned by a south-facing skylight, floods the home with natural light and introduces a dynamic interplay of light and color to the predominantly north-facing spaces.

As the clients also love hosting parties, it was important to have the flexibility of expanding spaces, with spill out spaces and terraces – this was achieved with bifold doors on both upper and lower levels, enhancing the flow of the home while creating seamless connections to its complementary interior spaces.
